NASCAR interns attend orientation at Lowe's
A growing internship program is an important part of NASCAR's commitment to diversifying the sport.
Overall, 130 students have interned in the NASCAR industry through the Diversity Internship Program, many going on to full-time industry employment in the program's eight years.
NASCAR is, of course, much different and more complicated than the traditional "stick and ball" sports. Each year, a new class of interns meets with NASCAR and its key partners to become immersed in the sport.
This past weekend, 14 young people in the 2007 internship program, which includes 20 interns in all, attended the biggest orientation to date at Lowe's Motor Speedway. They took a garage tour, visited Race Control, attended the Quaker Steak and Lube 200, and met NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Bill Lester as well as NASCAR president Mike Helton. The interns also attended the Nextel Pit Crew Challenge, visited the NASCAR Speedpark in Concord, N.C., and toured Hendrick Motorsports' facilities.
"This orientation weekend welcomes our interns to the sport and exposes them to its corporate and competition aspects," said Marcus Jadotte, managing director of Public Affairs at NASCAR. "We introduce these talented young people to key players in our industry to kick-start their understanding of the importance of networking and relationships in the industry."
In addition to rolling up their sleeves at NASCAR, students will intern at organizations in the sport such as Allstate, Hendrick Motorsports, Just Marketing, International Speedway Corp., Octagon, Roush-Fenway Racing, Sears Craftsman and SPEED.
