How did you get involved with NASCAR and the Internship Program?
The NASCAR College Tour visited my school, North Carolina A&T State University, in the fall of 2004. After hearing about the job opportunities, I decided to apply for the internship program. I was attracted to the exciting appeal of NASCAR. I didn’t know much about NASCAR, but I knew it was a growing sport and I really admired their marketing model.
What did you learn from your internship experience?
Working with Claire B. Lang of XM Satellite, you have no choice but to emerge yourself in NASCAR and the industry. I learned the basics of the sport, from the teams, drivers, and race tracks to the rules, the prominent figures and sponsorships. Throughout working with different industry professionals, I realized that NASCAR was more than a group of cars racing; it was a successful business that just happened to have a family environment.
How is your present position rewarding?
My present position is rewarding because I am able to touch so many people. Attending multiple events, working with different teams and being able to work on multiple projects has been such a wonderful learning experience. I'm also able to experience all facets of event marketing, marketing solutions and strategic planning. Working in the NASCAR industry is something unique. With the 100+ sponsors, teams, race tracks and agencies, the opportunity to meet and learn from industry members is limitless.
Quote: “NASCAR has not only provided me with one of the coolest entry-level positions in sports; it has helped me develop my network, grow as a professional and provided me with experiences I will never forget.”
