SUCCESS STORIES

Sean with Todd Ervin, ISC Director
of Multi-Cultural Marketing

Sean Nesbitt
Internship: 2007 Multi-Cultural Marketing Intern, International Speedway Corp.
Hometown and School: Newark, NJ, Norfolk State University
Currently Employed: Communications Coordinator, Grand-American Road Racing

How did you get involved with NASCAR and the Internship Program?
I was drawn to NASCAR’s Diversity Internship Program (NDIP) because of the opportunities I felt I would have after completing the program. As a marketing major in college, I knew that if I wanted a solid internship experience in marketing and communications that could lead to full-time employment then NDIP was the way to go. Also, Lindsay Bowen who was representing NASCAR at a recruiting event on my campus drew me to the program. She spoke of the energetic atmosphere of the motorsports industry and the great learning opportunities available.

What did you learn from your internship experience?
My internship with ISC has taught me a great deal about the motorsports industry. The most important thing I learned was the power and necessity of networking and relationship building. I have met so many great people through my internship that have given me advice or who have encouraged and supported me in my quest to gain full-time employment. The network I learned to build through my internship is one of the most valuable assets I have.

How is your present position rewarding?
My current position is and will be rewarding because I get to learn more about the motorsports industry. It puts me in the center of the action where I have the opportunity to learn about different functional areas. I will also learn about integrated marketing communications, which will be useful to my career in the future.

Currently, I am the Communications Coordinator for Grand-American Road Racing. Grand-Am is the premier professional road racing sanctioning body in North America. As the Communications Coordinator, I ensure that the appropriate information or messages are conveyed to the appropriate audience. This includes publishing content on Grand-Am's newly re-designed website (www.grand-am.com), interviewing drivers that compete in the Rolex Sports Car Series, and coordinating exciting press conferences.
